Of course, Muirhead Leather has to be manufactured to achieve its high performance levels. But we invest strategically to reduce the
costs and impact of manufacture and we will have achieved zero waste by 2015.

Each process is reviewed to reduce waste:

- Redesigned driers use 30% less energy.
- Airless spray system waste less dye and chemicals than to atomised sprayers.
- Heat recovery systems, application of variable speed drives and improved machinery control yield efficiency gains.

Our aim is to reduce the impact of our business beyond our boundaries:

- Beneficial reuse and recycling of all paper, plastic, metal, cardboard and wood, and composting of biodegradable waste.
- Waste cut by reducing shavings by precision splitting.
- Aim to sell trimmings and all recyclables.
- On-site effluent treatment features advanced systems.
- Research and development of eco-friendly tanning techniques.
- Increased use of environmentally benign compounds, and avoidance of compounds of concern.
- Investment in new chemical products and advanced treatment systems, including electrolysis and membrane technology, to
  eliminate target compounds.
- Working towards water re-use and avoidance of water discharge.
- Reduction of odour, emissions and noise with upgraded treatment processes.
